How to get Webmasters to queue up to send you Free Traffic

Pretty much everybody who runs a web site wants more traffic.

That's because more traffic, means more opportunities to make sales and/or generate advertising revenue.

But it's a struggle... increasing your web site traffic hasn't been easy.

What If There Were An Easier Way?
  • What if you could get other webmasters to link to you, for free?

  • What if those other webmasters ran other sites on similar topics to yours?

  • What if those other webmasters were actively trying to send you as much free traffic as possible?
Sounds like a fantasy? Not necessarily...

The Power Of Top Sites

A top site is a list of web sites on a similar topics. It can be any topic at all.

For example, you might have the top sites like:
  • The Top 100 Internet Marketing Sites
  • The Top 100 Video Game Sites
  • The Top 100 Sites about European Travel
  • The Top 50 Australian Education Sites
  • The Top 50 Diet and Weight Loss Sites
  • ...or anything else that you can think of!

Here's how they work:
  • One person (and this will be you!) runs the top site as part of their web site.

  • Other webmasters can join (become members) of the top site. When they join, their web site appears in the top site listing.

  • Each of these member webmasters is given a special voting link to place on their site.

  • The special voting link leads back to your top site, but automatically gives the corresponding member webmaster one "vote".

  • The more "votes" that any member of the top site gets, the higher ranked they are in the top site - and higher ranked sites tend to get more visitors back from the top site.

  • It is in each member's interest to encourage their visitors to click on the voting link (and visit your top site) in order to gain as many "votes" as possible (and thus get much traffic back from the top site as possible).

In short, top sites are a kind of traffic exchange mechanism between the webmaster members. Those members who contribute the most traffic ("votes") tend to get the most back of it.

So what do you get from running a top site?

Answer: You benefit the most, by getting to display your banner advertisements (or other content) to every single visitor to the top site.

But there's catch

Other webmasters competing to send you as much traffic as possible... sounds too good to be true?

Well, it's certainly possible, but there are a few things that you need to be aware of:
  • You'll want to run the top site on your own web site (there's no point getting people to visit somebody else's web site, and see somebody else's banner ads, in order to participate in your top site).

  • You'll want your top site to include precautions against cheaters (it's an unfortunate fact that some webmasters who participate in top sites will try to find ways to accummulate votes without their visitors ever seeing your top site or banners).

  • You'll want to be able to display the top site in a style and format that suits your web site.

  • You'll want good administration tools for you to manage the top site, and you'll want good management tools for your members (for example, for them to be able to see their statistics for votes).

So how do you get all this?

The good news: There is an answer...

Introducing our Top Site Script

The top site script allows you to easily run your own top site - or even multiple top sites.
  • If you want to run just one top site, you can install the top site script in just one directory.

  • If you want to run multiple top sites, you can install multiple copies of the top site script in different directories. Each of your top sites can either use a different MySQL database, or if you prefer you can share a single MySQL database for multiple top sites (useful if your web host only allows one or a limited number of MySQL databases).

The top site script includes three main areas of functionality:
  1. The user pages where your visitors can view and vote on your top site.

  2. The members' pages where webmasters who wish to participate in your top site can join, get their linking codes, and manage their accounts.

  3. An administration page (password protected of course) from which you can manage your top site.

User page features (many of which are controlled by your configuration options) include:
  • Your top site can include as many web site listings as you want.

  • Each web site listing includes a Title, Description, an optional Banner image, and a link to that web site.

  • You can setup a list of banned words (example: offensive words or phrases) that members are not allowed to use in their Titles or Descriptions.

  • You can setup a list of banned URLs (and partial URLs) that members are not allowed to use.

  • You can choose whether links to your member web sites are opened in a new window or the existing browser window.

  • For each web site listing, the top site automatically tracks the total number of incoming votes, the current number of incoming votes, the total number of outgoing votes, and the current number of outgoing votes.
    • "Incoming" votes, are clicks on a link on a member web site leading to your top site.
    • "Outgoing" votes, are clicks on your top site, leading to a member web site.
    • "Total" votes, are the total number of clicks since that listing was added.
    • "Current" votes, are the number of clicks since that counter was last reset (it can be reset periodically or manually).

  • You can set how often the current incoming and outgoing votes are reset.

  • You can specify how many of the top site listings may include banners (for example: if you have a top 50, you might only want to display banners for the top 3 listings).

  • You can choose whether to include a "Site Of The Moment" listing before the main top site listings.

  • If enabled the "Site Of The Moment" can be selected based on any of six criteria that you specify:
    1. The site that most recently received an incoming vote.
    2. The site that most recently was sent an outgoing vote.
    3. The site that most recently had its current votes reset.
    4. The site that least recently received an incoming vote.
    5. The site that least recently was sent an outgoing vote.
    6. The site that least recently had its current votes reset.

  • You can customize the layout of the top site page.

  • You can order the results in the top site page by any of four different orders.
    1. Sites with higher total incoming votes are higher ranked.
    2. Sites with higher total outgoing votes are higher ranked.
    3. Sites with higher current incoming votes are higher ranked.
    4. Sites with higher current outgoing votes are higher ranked.

  • You can choose whether to include listings for sites with zero total incoming votes.

  • You can choose whether to include listings for sites with zero current incoming votes.

  • You can choose whether to pad out your top site (if there are not enough items) with "Add Your Site" links.

  • You can prevent cheating by using a gateway page (when a user clicks on a voting link on one of your member's web sites, the user is sent to an intermediate page on your site before their vote is accepted).

  • You can customize the layout of the gateway page.

  • You can also use IP address info, and optionally cookies, for additional protection against cheating.

Functions for your webmasters members (again controlled by configuration):
  • Members can add their sites.

  • You can be notified automatically via email when a new member joins.

  • You can set whether new members are approved automatically (and thus can appear in the top site immediately) or are placed in a pending status until you have reviewed them for appropriateness.

  • Members are emailed a password automatically when they add their site, and they can use this to access their account management page.

  • Members can use their account management page to:
    • Read a welcome message from you (you can customize this message to)
    • Update their details
    • Change their password
    • Retrieve the voting link code to place on their sites (a text link and up to 10 banners)
    • Review their voting statistics

  • You can customize the appearance of the members' account management pages.

  • You can set the system to notify you automatically via email when a new site joins.

Your administration functions include:
  • You can review all sites, approved sites, or pending sites.

  • You can see detailed information for any site, including IP logging information for incoming and outgoing votes, and even discarded duplicate votes.

  • You can delete any member site.

  • You can edit any member site.

  • You can reset the current votes for any member site, or for all member sites.

  • You can change the status for any site between pending and approved (and vice-versa).

  • You can lock (or unlock site). A locked site can remain active in the top site, but the member will not be able to change their details.

  • All administration functions are password protected, but for additional security you can also (optionally) restrict access to the admin screen to a computer with a specific IP address (useful if you have a fixed IP address on your network or broadband connection).
